All-New 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Officially Revealed

Mitsubishi might be having a rough time in America, but in Asia, it's pushing out a new generation of its popular Pajero Sport series.

Some of you may also come to know the 7-seater SUV as the Challenger, Montero Sport, Nativa and Pajero Dakar in other markets.

A rival to the pickup-based Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Fortuner SUVs, the 2016 Pajero Sport owes its underpinnings to the latest iteration of the L200 / Triton pickup truck.

You can tell that it's related to the L200, but not in a bad way, as Mitsubishi gifted the rugged Pajero Sport with unique styling cues, including more contemporary front and rear end designs.

Inside, the dashboard layout is identical to the L200 with added touches in the way of trimmings, equipment, materials, steering wheel, and a different lower center console with a more upscale looking automatic gear lever.

The Pajero Sport rides on a 2,800mm wheelbase retaining the same width of 1,815mm as its predecessor, but it's 90mm longer at 4,785mm and 35mm shorter in height at 1,805mm for the AWD model. Mitsubishi says that ground clearance has increased by 13mm to 218mm.

While we expected the Pajero Sport to share the L200's new 2.4-liter MIVEC turbo diesel engine, which in Thailand, is rated at  181PS (178hp) and 430Nm (317lb-ft) of torque (the L200 also get a 154PS / 152hp version of the same unit), Mitsubishi surprised us by offering a brand-new 8-speed automatic instead of the truck's 5-speed unit.

The Japanese firm says that the new powertrain returns a 17-percent improvement in fuel economy over its predecessor, while also achieving CO2 emissions of under 200g/km.

Further details about the Pajero Sport, including specs and availability in markets outside Thailand should be released in the coming weeks.

The 2017 Toyota 86 Is Here To Replace The Scion FR-S

They say that from death comes life, and that sentiment can be used to describe the introduction of the first bona-fide sports car to the Toyota brand’s North American range in over a decade, the 86, born from the demise of the Scion FR-S.

Unveiled today at the New York Auto Show, the 2017 Toyota 86 is the reincarnation of what would have been the facelifted FR-S had Scion not been axed.

It borrows its name from the international model offered in Japan, Australia, South Africa and other countries, however, if you ask us, the European market moniker “GT 86” would have done just fine.

“The name 86 is shared globally, and is passed down from the car that inspires it, the Corolla GT-S, known by its true fans as the AE86 or “hachi-roku,” which means 8-6 in Japanese,” said Toyota boss Bill Fay during the car’s presentation in the Big Apple. “As you can see, the name isn’t the only thing that has changed. We’re investing in the 86 to make it better than ever, with styling updates, new wheels and more premium materials throughout.

And by that, Fay means the 86’s front end got a little bit busier than the FR-S – a pattern we’re seeing on other recent Toyota models too, like the Prius Prime, with a larger front grille, new LED headlamp fixtures and turn signals, and a reshaped bumper. The rear was refinished with LED tail lamps and a new bumper design, with the car also gaining a new set of alloy wheels.

Inside, Toyota says it added a new “Grandlux” soft-touch material on the instrument panel surround and the door trims, together with different upholstery for the seats with silver stitching and a new sports steering wheel with integrated audio controls, and in the automatic models, bigger paddle shifters.

Beneath the skin, the 86 benefits from a retuned suspension to improve handling, and in the case of the 6-speed manual gearbox model, a change in the differential ratio and a 5hp bump for the 2.0-lite flat four engine that now produces 205hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. The automatic model keeps the same 200hp engine as the 2016 FR-S.

The new Toyota 86 will go on sale in US and Canadian dealerships this fall, by which time, we should see its Subaru twin, the 2017 BRZ facelift, that was caught undisguised earlier this week sporting similar number of revisions.

The Toyota Highlander is one of those crossovers that makes one wonder why its owner didn’t just buy a minivan. Sure, it’s got a tall ride height and styling that makes it look vaguely like a truck, but that styling isn’t very interesting, and there’s nothing on the spec sheet that hints at the Highlander being fun to drive.

At least Toyota is diligent about updates. Debuting at the 2016 New York Auto Show, the 2017 Toyota Highlander gets a refresh that includes revised styling and some mechanical changes. The updates will likely keep the Highlander selling in droves, but probably won’t make it any less boring.

The biggest news is the addition of an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 that Toyota says is new. The company wouldn’t release specifications for this powertrain, but says it will be shared with the 2017 Sienna minivan. The 3.5-liter V6 in the current Highlander makes 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic.

Scaled Composites and Microsoft Close to Completing World’s Largest Airplane

Scaled Composites has confirmed that its Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft, the world’s biggest plane, will begin testing next year. The concept of the plane is a product of combined innovation from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and Burt Rutan, founder of Scaled Composites. The plane is currently under construction at Mojave Air and Spaceport in California, and will eventually have a wingspan of 385 feet.

Initially, the system was intended to just deliver satellites weighing up to about 13,500lbs (6,124 kg) into orbits between 112 miles and 1,243 miles above Earth. However, instead of just satellites, the Stratolaunch airplane could launch a Dream Chaser spaceship carrying a satellite. The Stratolauncher will climb to 30,000 feet and launch a rocket at high altitude, avoiding the huge fuel costs of launching from Earth. The Dream Chaser will then go into orbit and deliver a satellite. The idea is for the Stratolaunch Carrier is to act as a giant air pad in the sky, allowing payloads to reach space faster and at a lower cost than existing technologies.

“It could provide a highly responsive capability with the potential to reach a variety of LEO [low Earth orbit] destinations and return astronauts or payloads to a U.S. runway within 24 hours,” said Chuck Beames, president of Allen’s Vulcan Aerospace. “Stratolaunch’s ability to launch from variable locations will enable satellites and humans to be efficiently inserted into their most optimal orbit at a time of the customer’s choosing.”

The first launch of the space launch vehicle is likely to take place in 2018. There are currently several launch sites under consideration, including ones at the Kennedy Space Center, Wallops Island and Vandenberg AFB. Scaled Composites president Kevin Mickey says the company has so far built “roughly 200,000lbs of composite structure” for the vehicle so far. It will be powered by six 747-class engines during its first flight in 2016 and will weigh 1.2 million pounds.

6 reasons why the 2016 Suzuki Alto Works could be the world's most cheap & cheerful new car you can buy from the showroom in 2016

If you don’t know what a 軽自動車 (aka kei car) is and why most have ‘only’ 64 horsepower, watch ‘Kei to the City’ film by Mightycarmods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu6h5IoqkoA before you read this.

First, a quick history lesson.

Suzuki in Europe are known for the Swift Sport warm hatch. But they’ve also had quite a portfolio of cheap-and-cheerful cars like the Cappuccino, which rivalled the Honda Beat and the Autozam AZ-1. The Cappuccino featured a turbocharged 3 cylinder 657cc engine, producing 64ps- the most powerful kei car in the early 90s. But more importantly, this engine was also fitted to a FWD or AWD hatchback called the ‘Alto Works’ . Unless you knew about this car on Gran Turismo, it has been overlooked through western car community. This 4th generation (codenamed HA11) was very well-received for its affordable price, and often used for one-make races, hill climbs and rallying. Suzuki axed production by 1998 and for the next decade, there wasn’t really a spiritual successor until 2015; where Suzuki unveiled the ‘Alto Turbo RS’. While the RS appealed many local enthusiasts, the performance and driving involvement was hindered by the only transmission offered- CVT.

Now, the car you see in this photo is called the 2016 Alto Works. Yes, the name is back! I know that you can get great used cars for cheap as chips nowadays but here are 6 reasons why the car in this photo could be the world’s most cheap & cheerful car:

TURBO - because who doesn’t like choo-choo sounds? But in all seriousness, you can easily yield more power (at your own risk). Just think about the power-to-weight ratio potential, or even an engine swap from a bigger car…

MANUAL - obviously more driver satisfaction than the 2015 Alto Turbo RS

WEIGHT - With all the modern safety equipment & technology, the FWD model opted with the manual weighs only 670kg. Thats 30kg lighter than the cappuccino, 50kg less than an Elise and half the weight of a MK7 Golf GTI (which is considered a ‘light car’)

PRICE - It starts from 1.5 million yen (you have the internet to figure out the exchange rate for your currency)

OWNERSHIP COSTS - its a kei car after all, cheap on fuel, cheap on tax, cheap on insurance, cheap on replacement parts and consumables compared to a much bigger, heavier and faster car

RECAROs - this has to be one of the cheapest ways to get a car equipped with Recaro seats. Just let that sink in, Recaros on a kei car…

Now how awesome would it be to fit a LSD, grippy & fatter tyres and gain 100hp out from this engine?

As this is a true Japanese Domestic Model, there are no plans of Suzuki to sell this car to those of you who live outside Japan. Are you butthurt that I wasted your time reading all this?

2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport pricing and specifications

The all-new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has launched in Australia this week, ahead of going on sale to the public from next Monday.

In addition to announcing a high level of safety equipment for the top-specification Exceed model, the entire Mitsubishi Pajero Sport range is bolstered by a five-star ANCAP safety rating, seven airbags and an impressive 3100kg braked towing capacity — the latter placing it ahead of the recently released Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner.

The model range includes three variants — GLX, GLS and Exceed — with the range starting from $45,000 (before on-road costs) and moving up to $48,500 for the mid-specification GLS and topping out at $52,750 for the flagship Exceed.

The entire range is powered by the Triton ute’s Euro-5 compliant 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission — a Mitsubishi first.

Mitsubishi’s new gearbox helps reduce fuel consumption by 17 per cent compared with the Challenger, with the Pajero Sport claiming 8.0 litres per 100km across the range in comparison to the Challenger’s 9.8L/100km in automatic trim.
The entire range comes with a four-wheel-drive system with four drive modes and a mode selection system. The car predominantly operates in two-wheel-drive mode until the driver selects a four-wheel-drive mode with both a high-range and low-range gearbox option available. While a centre differential lock comes standard, a rear differential lock is not available on the entry level GLX — but is standard on GLS and Exceed models.

Mitsubishi engineers have altered the Triton’s rear suspension setup by removing leaf springs and instead opting for a three-link coil-sprung rear. This move is in line with brands like Ford and Toyota, which have included a coil-sprung rear in their equivalent Everest and Fortuner.
Technology is at the forefront of the Pajero Sport offering with all models featuring DAB+ digital radio, Android Auto and Apple Car Play, making this one of the most technologically advanced infotainment offerings in the segment.

The range is available with six colours and comes with Mitsubishi’s five-year 100,000km new car warranty and servicing sits within 12 monthly or 15,000km intervals.

Disc brakes front and rear add to the performance features. The DR650S’ seat height can be lowered by more than 1.5 inches, helping riders tailor the bike to their preference (using a Suzuki Accessory side-stand kit).

The 2016 Suzuki DR650S will return without changes next year, except for new Black and Gray bodywork.
